Our K-9 program is supported by home teachers within your local community. The teachers are there to help you, guide you and support you in the education of your children, as well as to ensure students meet the requirements of the Provincial Learning Outcomes provided by the Ministry of Education.
The home teacher will meet with you in person where possible a minimum of three times each year to help plan your program and evaluate your children’s progress. These meetings are a time to provide constructive input in to your program and to celebrate learning and showcase achievements.
When planning your program, TLA allows you as much freedom as possible to choose your curriculum materials and plan a program that best suits your children’s needs. Some parents like suggestions when deciding on curriculum while others just want a guideline. Curriculum selection often occurs as early as June, corresponding with the Annual BC Home School Convention. TLA teachers make every effort to meet with you to set up your program over the summer months so that you are prepared for September. They will be evaluating your program to ensure that there are no “holes” with respect to the provincial learning outcomes and if needed can suggest alternate or additional resources.
TLA’s DL program is accountable to the Ministry of Education, and because of that, we must ensure that each enrolled student's educational program:
- Meets the provincial learning outcomes in the required subjects
- Employs a variety of teaching strategies and learning activities;
- Uses various assessment and evaluation methods;
- Includes hands-on activities and collaborative and oral language experiences;
- Is directed by a BC certified teacher, who must complete course planning; engage in on-going content/skill building instruction with students; assess and evaluate student progress; and prepare a minimum of three written reports on student achievement each year.
In summary, your home teacher will help establish a learning program for your family, maintain weekly contact with your children throughout the school year, and evaluate and report on your children’s progress. Above all though, the teachers are available for help, guidance and support in your home learning program.
