Event Descriptions:1.VIEWING WILDLIFE in the Lower Mainland & Fish in Urban Streams Wildlife: Despite being the most populated portion of British Columbia, the Lower Mainland Region is home to hundreds of terrific sites to observe wildlife. From tide water to alpine meadow, there is something spectacular for all to enjoy in every season. The Lower Mainland Region stretches from Vancouver eastward through the Fraser Valley to E.C. Manning Provincial Park, and includes the Sunshine Coast from Gibsons to Powell River, and the corridor from Squamish through Whistler to Pemberton. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/documents/wldviewing/facetofacewithwildlife.pdf Fish: Did you know there are thirty-two Lower Mainland Region sites where you may go to observe fish during the spawning portion of their life cycle. These sites are representative of the hundreds of important small streams that provide critical, year-round fish habitat. Many opportunities exist for you and your family to participate with local groups in projects involving the maintenance and enhancement of fish streams. Viewing Opportunities Five species of salmon (sockeye, coho, chum, chinook and pink) begin and end life in freshwater streams and rivers, but spend most of their life in the ocean. These species are usually on a four year cycle, except pink salmon which have a two year cycle. The most spectacular of these five species is the sockeye salmon. Sockeye turn bright red during the spawning period. The Weaver Creek Spawning Channel is the best site in the Lower Mainland Region to observe sockeye. Migrating steelhead trout can be seen at the Coquihalla Canyon Recreation Area. Cutthroat trout usually spawn in the spring months. However, there is a rare population of coastal cutthroat trout that may be viewed at the outlet of Ruby Lake from mid October through November. Spawning fish attract other wildlife species that come to feed on the dead and dying fish. The most spectacular of these species is the Bald Eagle. Three excellent places to view eagles are in the Squamish area and in the Harrison Bay area from November to January, and in the fang Creek area from late October to December. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/documents/wldviewing/fishviewingurbanstreams.pdf 2.CHILDREN AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS - 101 Things to Do It is extremely important to spend time outdoors with your child. The Society operates two tall ships, the Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift, and offers sail training to young people ages 13-27 (as well as Day Sails for all ages). These ships are maintained at the SALTS Heritage Shipyard at 203 Harbour Road, Victoria BC. Each year, 2000 young people have the life changing experience of learning to sail a tall ship with SALTS. Voyages take them to the Gulf Islands of BC each spring and fall, and in the summer the ships circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Every few years SALTS conducts an offshore voyage to ports around the world. Young people from all socio-economic backgrounds participate, and a bursary program covers costs for those who cannot afford to pay. SALTS partners with numerous other youth organizations to provide bursaries to youth who are at-risk, from low income households, or from challenging life situations. Young “trainees” learn all aspects of sailing the ship. They are split into three “watch” groups and given responsibilities as training crew. At least one watch is always on duty, working in shifts both day and night. Duties include taking the wheel of the ship, bow watch, sail handling, anchor watch, navigation, radio monitoring, small boat handling, galley chores, etc. Formal instruction is given regarding sailing theory, rules of the road, sailing terminology, knots, etc. Trainees work their way through the SALTS sail training curriculum. Shore trips to beautiful coastal islands and rousing evening mug-ups with games, stories, and singing make for an exciting and diverse experience. Trainees are encouraged to develop a strong work ethic and take on responsibility. They learn about teamwork and cooperation, because it takes everyone’s participation to sail the ship. They develop relational skills, learn to deal with interpersonal conflict, and live in close community. Most report an increase in confidence as a result of overcoming their fears and succeeding in challenges—such as climbing the rigging 115’ in the air on a moving ship! Intentional discussions at meal times and informal conversations provide opportunities for “life training” and mentorship. For additional information please check the website.
